Students and staffs from Dalian University of Tech

Students and staffs from Dalian University of Technology (DUT) 🇨🇳 visited our campus last month❗️

Prof Shi of School of Materials and Chemical Engineering 🧪💻 welcomed the students, followed by a presentation on overview of science & engineering fields of Science Tokyo by Prof Nozaki (School of Engineering⚡️).

After the presentation, the group were greeted in front of the main building by now Science Tokyo graduate school students who had graduated from DUT. The group had a brief campus tour walk🚶🚶‍♀️and enjoyed lunch 🍜🍛at Tsubame Terrace!

DUT has been one of our partner universities 🎓since 2006 and has an agreement on student exchange with tuition waiver. There are also short-term programs between the two universities which offer students of both universities great opportunities to study abroad ✈️.

- 8 international students who completed their Intensive Japanese Course 🇯🇵 this January, and
- 7 first year students of the Global Scientists and Engineers Program (GSEP)

The joint poster presentation - in Japanese - was held at the @takiplaza on 17 January.

Students 👧👦from nearby elementary school came to see the presentation! We are pretty sure that they were able to experience and enjoy the culture 🕌🪷🎶🥋, history and cuisine 🍲🥪 of the each presentator.

ADB-JSP Scholar alumni Yasser 🇮🇩 shares his stories during his day at Science Tokyo🏫🎓

It started from my undergrad that the desire to study in Japan 🇯🇵 began, knowing one of my alumni (and also Tokyo Tech alumni) was working in a job I desired.

Fast forward… I landed my full-time job and in early 2020 when the pandemic hit 😷, I began to commit my time to apply for a master’s program at Tokyo Tech.

It was all blurred in the beginning, but thanks to social media I could randomly chat few Tokyo Tech alumni and do my own research on the programs. I prepared the prerequisites for my application, passing through three interview stages, and… voilà, I’ve been accepted into Tokyo Tech as an ADB-JSP scholar!🥳✨

However, things did not go according to plan😭: I needed to stay for six months in my home country as the border was closed.

Tokyo Tech was very adaptive that during my first semester, the online courses I took were pretty pleasant and engaging.

I arrived in Japan 🇯🇵 in Q2/2022, and also felt very welcomed by my supervisor, ADB-JSP staff, and lab mates who got me onboard as an international student so smoothly.

I became busy with my academic while trying to balance this by traveling around Tokyo with my family and participating in off-campus activities. Notably, my team was awarded the local champion 🏆in the investment….

Two years went by so easily… I will definitely miss commuting to the campus or spending my time in our beautiful library; jogging with scenic views; seeing beautiful architecture or advanced infrastructure; good food; and many more.

Lastly, I am thankful for the support from my family, my supervisor Dr. Kyoko Nagata, ADB-JSP and its staff, friends, and people I connected with/passed by unexpectedly.

Octareza, ADB-JSP scholar sharing his stories at Science Tokyo!!✨

ADB-JSP program offers scholarship for master’s program: candidate must be one of the nationals of ADB borrowing member countries and requires min 2 years of full-time professional work experience📁

“Pursuing Master Degree is one of my big dreams. Back to June 2021 when ADB-JSP informed me that my proposal of scholarship was not selected. However immediately, in August 2021 (less than 1 month before new semester commencement) ADB-JSP informed that 2 candidates declined the scholarship offering. Hence the scholarship was offered to me. I accept this last calling and that was the time when I was officially changing the status to be Master student in Tokyo Tech.

Border that limits permit to enter Japan did not allow me to attend study in face. I have to attend one semester online class from Indonesia 🇮🇩 . Eventually in May 2022 I able to enter Japan ✈️. However almost the whole study still was held online. I almost lost the experience attend the class in the classroom. Finally in September 2022 classes gradually allow to be held in face. I experience to have lunch 🥪 after class with classmates”

“I would like to deliver my gratitude to ADB-JSP that have awarded me as one of the scholars. Finally, it is the time to complete this journey. This journey gives me a good experience and knowledge. Japan has brought very good memory for me. I will never forget this precious time.”

GSEP (The Global Scientists and Engineers Program), our English taught bachelor’s program since April 2016 allowes qualified international students who have little or no proficiency in the Japanese language to pursue an engineering bachelor’s degree in Science Tokyo.

My obsession with moving abroad ✈️ was something from way back in middle school… I got offers at a few places, but Tokyo Tech was the best choice for me in multiple ways; it was closer to home 🏠 , well connected, scholarship opportunities were available 👛, and there’s just a more unique culture to experience here. I had inquired about different places with friends and acquaintances as well. It was my first time abroad by myself, and I wanted to take the best choice after all.

The second year has been a roller-coaster ride🎢 for me. There were many assignments📓💻, but it was more satisfying than the first year in terms of learning, as I got the opportunity to take major courses. These major courses introduced me to the fundamentals of science and engineering in various fields. The best thing about my department is that it lets you explore different fields, develop a flexible mindset, and find a suitable passion to pursue. If you look at the available laboratories in the Department of Transdisciplinary Science and Engineering (TSE), you can see how diverse the research topics are.
