As a food enthusiast, I’ve explored a variety of food scenes around our university throughout my four years on campus. Whether you are new to Ookayama Campus or want to try a new lunch, this blog is for you. This blog will also help prospective students imagine what lunchtime here is like. I will share my favorite places to grab a quick meal, focusing on bentos that are easy on the wallet. Join me on this food-hunting journey, and let’s explore the hidden gems of Ookayama Campus together!

I have often been asked, “Where do you get your lunch?” This question comes not only from international students but also from local Japanese students. I recall my first day on Ookayama Campus when a kind senior introduced me to the shopping streets and showed me where to find affordable bentos, emphasizing that takeout is cheaper than dining in a restaurant due to the lower tax rate — 8% for takeout versus 10% for dine-in.

I now want to pass down the kindness and share my food-hunting experiences with you all. Below is a list of my favorite spots around Ookayama for lunch (in no particular order), though it’s not all-inclusive

1. Kitchen Cars

Every weekday, there will be two kitchen cars operating under the tree beside the second cafeteria, offering different dishes daily. Reminder — there is usually a long queue around 12:20 p.m., so try to avoid this time if you don’t want to wait. For more information on the kitchen cars, please see the Ookayama Campus Lunch Schedule.

[ Monday ] Smokin’ Bluemoon (Herb chicken and rice is halal)

[ Thursday ] SANO家

[ Thursday ] Comida Latina

[ Friday ] 欧風台所NeMo’n

2. Coop Bento

Located right next to the second cafeteria, in front of West Building 4. If it is closed, you can still get bentos at the Coop store below Tsubame Terrace (West Bldg. 5). Sometimes they offer discounts. I once bought a bento in the store below Tsubame Terrace at 1 p.m. and got a 20% discount!

There is also a Coop store inside the Main Building (本館), in front of the second cafeteria, which offers a variety of convenience foods, including Coop bentos. Halal food is also available, with keema curry featured on the menu in July 2024. Coop regularly releases new menus, so keep an eye out for the latest halal bento options!

Now let’s explore outside the campus!

3. Sichuan Yatai (四川屋台)

Located in front of the main gate, next to McDonald’s. Remember to bring cash. Many students find the portions generous. Normally, I opt for the spicy Yurinchi (辛油淋鶏).

4. Matsuyatei (松屋亭)

Located on the shopping street beside Ookayama Campus. From the Main Gate, turn right and go straight until you see a yellow and green canopy. From the South Gate (Ishikawadai), turn right, then left, and go straight. They sell a variety of Japanese bentos, and I love their fish option!

5. Mamai

A Bangladeshi/Indian restaurant just next to Matsuyatei (松屋亭). It offers curry sets with naan or rice. Be sure to have cash on hand.

6. Coconut Sugar

This is a Thai restaurant. Other than dine-in meals, they also sell Thai bentos for lunch. As of July 5, 2024, the price of a bento is 750 yen. If you are a fan of Thai food and plan to visit often, remember to get a stamp card (takeout point card) from the lady! After collecting 15 stamps, you will receive a 500 yen discount.

7. Ichiban

Located on the main shopping street, on the right side of Ookayama Station. It is basically a supermarket, but it offers a wide range of bento options. Also, be sure to have cash on hand.
