Student Ambassador from April 2022 to March 2023

Hello! I am Shiela Marie Selisana and I am a 3rd year doctoral student in the Kajiwara and Orihara Laboratory. Before coming to Japan, I worked as a faculty member at the University of the Philippines Los Baños for seven years, and I have received research fellowships at the National Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (BIOTEC) in Thailand and at Academia Sinica in Taiwan. I first entered Tokyo Tech as a non-degree research student and half a year later started pursuing a PhD in Human Centered Science and Biomedical Engineering. I skipped the MS program at Tokyo Tech because I already got my Master of Science degree in Microbiology (major in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology) from my home country, the Philippines. My current research deals with Candida auris – an emerging fungal pathogen that is designated as a global public health threat by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) – and its interaction with the innate immune system. My research generally aims to understand the human immune response against C. auris to develop novel strategies to manage diseases caused by this pathogen.
