Hi, my name is Diego, and I’m from Ecuador. Growing up, I was the kid who would pry open his toys just to figure out how they worked. That curiosity eventually led me to science, except now, instead of toys, I use the power of the theory of relativity to work on the detection of gravitational waves. How cool is that!
I first joined Science Tokyo as a master’s student nearly three years ago, and last year, I started my PhD. I am grateful that the Institute recognized my potential and provided me with incredible opportunities. Not only was I welcomed into the Japanese community, but I was also given a platform to share my work with the world. Through my research and the people I’ve met here, I’ve gained new perspectives both academically and personally.
Beyond research, living in Japan has been an eye-opening experience. It has shown me breathtaking landscapes, incredible food, and some of the kindest people I’ve ever met. Coming here wasn’t just about discovering Japanese culture, it was about discovering myself and seeing the world from a new perspective.
