Hi everyone! I’m Gemini (Praewa Chaiwoot), a master course student here at Science Tokyo. If you are anything like me, one of the first things you thought about after getting your acceptance letter was: “What is the food like?”

I have spent a lot of time on both sides of the Institute. My first year as a research student was spent at the Ookayama campus, but in the latter two years of my master’s degree studies often bring me to the Yokohama campus. Because I move between both, I have had plenty of time to test the menus and found the best spots to hide away during a busy day. Whether you have dietary restrictions or you are just looking for a great meal, I want to share what I have learned so far.

The Best Part of Spring: Cherry Blossoms at Yokohama campus

Before we get into the menus, I have to tell you about the view at Yokohama campus*. While many people flock to famous spots in the city to see cherry blossoms, we have something really special on this campus. Thanks to the greener, quieter location, the cherry blossom season feels very peaceful and intimate.

My favorite thing during spring is grabbing a window seat in the cafeteria. You can actually see the cherry blossom trees in full bloom while you eat your lunch. There is a specific kind of joy in watching the pink petals fall slowly while you take a break from the laboratory. It is the best way to de-stress and honestly, it makes a simple university lunch feel like a fancy picnic. If you are joining us at Yokohama campus, make sure to find your favorite “sakura seat” early!

My Favorite Spots: Tsubame Terrace and Kitchen MOTOTECH

People often ask me which campus has better food. It is hard to choose because they both have their own charms.

At Ookayama, I really love the new cafeteria. It is on the second floor of West Building 5, and it feels very modern and open. The best part is the outdoor seating. On a sunny day, sitting out there with a fresh bowl from the salad bar is amazing. They also have hot plate specials like hamburgers that are really filling when you have a long day of classes ahead.

Photo 3: While the main menu is similar to other campus cafeterias, the real highlights here are the customizable salad bar and the sizzling hot plate specials, especially their popular hamburgers. (Prices as of March 2026)

But if I am being honest, my heart belongs to Kitchen MOTOTECH at Yokohama campus. It is a little cafe on the second floor of Suzukake Hall, and it feels like a true hidden gem. The menu changes every day, and everything I have tried there has been delicious. My top recommendation is the Roast Beef Bowl. Plus, a quick tip: students get free coffee with lunch set!

Navigating the Menu: Tips for Halal and Allergies

I first visited these cafeterias with other students in a group. I remember my Muslim friend being a bit worried about how to find food they could eat, especially with a different language and different ingredients. If you are looking for Halal-friendly options or have allergies, here is what I have discovered:

  • Check the Icons: The cafeteria is actually very good about labeling. Look for the little pictures on the menu cards. There are 28 icons in total. The ones you should watch out for most are the Pig (豚肉) and Gelatin (ゼラチン). Just a heads up that in Japan, gelatin is almost always made from pork unless it specifically says it isn’t.
  • The Hidden Stuff: One thing that surprised me was the seasonings. Things like soy sauce or salad dressing often have a bit of alcohol or mirin in them. These aren’t always on the allergy stickers, so keep that in mind if you are being very strict.
  • Safe Bets: If you are ever unsure, I usually go for the salt-grilled mackerel (saba shioyaki) or the salmon bowl (sakedon). They are simple, healthy, and really tasty. I actually find myself craving that mackerel even at home!
Photo 6: A close-up look at the ingredient labels used in the cafeteria. It is really helpful to check these icons before you select your meal, especially if you are looking for specific meats or avoiding certain allergens.
Photo 7: The full menu display in front of the cafeteria entrance. I always find it helpful to look through the options and check the prices here before joining the line. (Prices as of March 2026)
Photo 8: The daily Halal-friendly (ハラール推奨) menu. There is typically one option available per day, and while the menu stays quite similar throughout the week, it is the most convenient choice for students following a Halal diet. (Prices as of March 2026)
Photo 9: The cafeteria is split into different stations for main dishes, noodles, and side dishes. Quick tip for new students: if the lines at Tsubame Terrace are too long in the early part of the semester, try the Second Cafeteria in the Main Building for a quicker meal.

Don’t Forget the Food Trucks!

If you get bored of the cafeteria, you have to try the food trucks. At Yokohama campus, they are parked right in front of the cafeteria building. I have seen everything from “Rocket Chicken” (the best fried chicken!) to Korean BBQ rice bowls, tacos, and Indian curry. The variety changes every day, so it is a great way to try something different without even leaving campus.

Being an international student can be overwhelming, but food is one of the best ways to feel at home. Don’t be afraid to try new things or ask the staff questions. Everyone is very kind and they are used to helping students from all over the world. I hope this guide helps you find your new favorite lunch spot!
